Talking to kids about the oil spillFor now, the news from the site of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is good. The enormous cap put in place on July 15 appears to be holding up, containing the oil and stopping the leak. Progress is also being made in the drilling of relief wells, which when completed will try to seal the well with mud and concrete.

But this remains the worst oil spill in American history and the devastating effects will be felt for years to come. Right now tar balls are washing up on the beaches of Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi and Florida and thousands of workers have been deployed to clean up the oil.

While many of us are still reeling from the sites we see in the Gulf, we need to consider how this nightly news impacts our children. Devastation of the environment is particularly depressing for children, as they are fully aware that this is the land they will inherit. The sheer scale of the devastation can be overwhelming.

Environmental experts at Ranger Rick magazine present some clear explanations and answers about the oil spill at the National Wildlife Federation. Here is their guide for teachers and parents.

Publishing the week of July 29th the Kid Scoop page covering the Oil Spill will provide another tool for parents to discuss this with their kids and the Kids site content for the week will explain more about the spill and its effects.
