The Winter Olympics serves as an exciting backdrop to honing geography, math and language arts skills. Students will be introduced to Sumi, Migua and Quatchi - the mascots of the 2010 Olympic games - and learn about the legends surrounding these mythical creatures. Additional activities include time zone puzzles, identifying winter sports using math skills, and understanding the symbolic link between logos and the products they represent. Internet links provide opportunities to practice 21st century research skills.

In this issue students will:
• learn about the location of the Winter Olympics
• be introduced to the mascots for the games and a variety of sports unique to the winter months
• use logic and reasoning skills to solve a numbers puzzle
• use the newspaper to locate logos and team mascots
