Family Tree

Welcome to a garden that grows trees of a distinctly different kind. These bear no food, provide no shade, and don’t replace oxygen in the atmosphere. Our “Family Trees” help tell the story of who you are, how you are connected to others in your family, and which relatives belong to which parent. Kid Scoop’s friendly monster, Gruffle, guides young genealogists to understand how a Family Tree grows backward, forward, and expands over time with branches full of relatives who came together from different parts of the world to make “one-of-a-kind” YOU! You’re going to add branches to your growing Family Tree someday, so let’s get started!

In this issue students will:

  • understand the layout and purpose of a Family Tree
  • learn new vocabulary
  • create a personal Family Tree
  • interview relatives to learn about ancestors
  • take notes during an interview
  • use the newspaper to locate family activities to share
  • compare and contrast “then and now” illustrations
  • write descriptively about a notable family event
  • make a family collage from words and pictures in the news
