September may be “Disaster Preparedness Month,” but any month is the right time to learn how to be safe. Although no one knows when a major disaster may occur, everyone can be prepared—just in case! From knowing where to assemble, where emergency supplies are stored, or where to go for help, it pays to be ready, and Kid Scoop is here to help! This edition introduces the topic of emergency preparedness by highlighting how Rotary International steps up when disasters happen around the world. Through its ShelterBox provisions, Rotary has helped thousands of displaced families get back on their feet during difficult times. What’s in a ShelterBox? Open this issue and peek inside!
In this issue students will:
- read informational text about preparing for disasters
- learn what’s inside Rotary International’s “ShelterBox”
- calculate sums to identify even or odd results
- add missing vowels to a list of emergency supplies
- use the newspaper to locate wants and needs
- understand different items are needed in different emergencies
- write descriptively about a problem that was solved
- rewrite a news ad to support ShelterBox U.S.A.
