de-antsAnts! Ants! Ants! They show up when you least expect them… in your garden, your kitchen or at your picnic! Ants are everywhere, but they also have homes of their own. These amazing critters serve many roles in the ant world from architect, to builder, to swashbuckling security guard, to trailblazers hunting for food. They create functional “homes” underground with special rooms for special occasions. Social creatures, the ant has clever structures adapted over eons of time to help them survive and thrive. They form armies, provide babysitting, build nests and stay busy keeping supplies in stock. No wonder they are among the busiest of insects.

In this issue students will:

  • read expository text about habits of ants
  • complete a cloze reading activity to check ant-like comprehension
  • write about an ant vacation. What will they pack?
  • build content vocabulary
  • solve mazes and puzzles
  • use the newspaper to find people jobs that are also ant jobs
  • differentiate between nouns, verbs and adjectives to create a silly ant story
