Bike Safety

de-bikesafetyLearning to ride a bike is a great accomplishment for kids! But sharing the road with cars, trucks and other bicyclists means being extra smart about safety. This issue focuses on what it takes to be a safe traveler who can ‘go with the flow’ and remain trouble-free. Five major rules to live by are critical to playing it safe – wear a helmet; stop at stop signs; move with the traffic flow; check traffic over your shoulder (but don’t swerve) and be extra cautious coming out of driveways or between parked cars. Parents and kids alike will benefit from the safety message so everyone is aware of and can follow the same rules of the road.

In this issue students will:

  • Learn about bike safety
  • Practice “close” reading to complete a “cloze” reading with expository text
  • Identify safe practices
  • Use the newspaper to locate moving items and pictures of safe and unsafe situations
  • Unscramble words to practice spelling
  • Write a safety advice article
