Census

It’s easy to count the people living in your house, and harder to calculate accurately the total in your neighborhood. Imagine the challenge if you had to count everyone in the entire country. Yet that is precisely what the United States government requires every ten years when it conducts its “census” of people living in all 50 states. 2020 is the year to begin again! Why this need to count all people? It’s important that each state is fairly represented in government, and the number of representatives depends on your state’s population. Federal dollars pay for other services in your state depending on the same count! This issue introduces young citizens to the ‘big ideas” of the census through charts, puzzles, and evidence-based questions. Kids will conduct their own census and problem solve services needed for a imaginary town. You can always “count” on Kid Scoop for up-to-date and relevant news for kids!

In this issue young citizens will:

  • read informational text about the census
  • understand why and when the census occurs
  • problem solve Fun Town’s needs based on data and careful observation
  • compare a century of census taking using circle graphs
  • census count pictures in the news
  • respond to evidence-based questions
  • locate animals in a “wild census” of your own
  • identify a local challenge and respond creatively to solve it!
  • write an opinion piece about voter age from a kid’s point of view
