Turn on the tap, and out comes clean fresh water! How fortunate to access to this essential resource at our fingertips. Not all children worldwide are so lucky. Some live in areas where water is scarce and must be carried in buckets to their homes—water that is not always clean or healthy for drinking or cooking. Learn what an organization called “Rotary International” is doing to address this—and other—world problems. Think about how many things depend on clean water to thrive and survive. Understand how health is improved through simple hygiene of washing hands with soap and water. Get inspired to become a community hero and help others locally to solve real problems in your own community!

In this issue students will:

  • read informational text about water as a natural resources and its impact on health
  • use context clues to select correct vocabulary
  • learn about the important work of Rotary International to address world problems
  • use a grid to duplicate an illustration
  • understand the importance of washing hands
  • make a “clean water” poster using newspaper photos
  • calculate sums
  • identify heroes addressing problems in your community
  • compete to complete a water maze
  • write about ways you can take care of our planet
