A rotten thing can be a good thing for our planet if it rots the right way in the right place. Composting is one easy way that leftover food can be turned magically into healthy soil! Not everything in the garbage can be part of the “composting club,” however—only materials like paper, grass clippings, or leftover eggshells qualify! Students will be challenged to identify things that belong in the compost bin and understand the difference between organic and inorganic matter. Budding young environmentalists will learn about challenges to our environment—like methane gas production or landfill problems—that can be mitigated though composting, and they’ll be invited to think about and describe in writing one action step to take at school or home to get that matter composting. In this issue students will:

  • read informational text about composting
  • learn what materials can be composted
  • understand the difference between organic and inorganic matter
  • calculate sums to identify compostables
  • discover how composting helps the planet
  • read about challenges to landfills
  • use the newspaper to identify examples organic and inorganic materials
  • write descriptively about how to diminish food waste at home and at school
  • locate pictures and words in the newspaper to create a “good life” collage
