← Continue shopping

Grabbing a bag of buttery hot popcorn is a popular way to enjoy a movie at your favorite cinema. Popcorn, however, is just one of thousands of items made from the corn plant. This versatile vegetable—grown for over 9,000 years—has been developed into products ranging from tortillas to batteries to diapers. It’s no wonder! One small kernel can grow into a single ear of corn containing hundreds of kernels. Multiplying like magic, those kernels will be around for years to come guaranteeing that your local theater won’t run out of popcorn anytime soon!

In this issue students will:

  • read informational text about corn
  • understand corn’s seasonal growth from kernel to harvest
  • use context clues to select correct vocabulary
  • learn differences between corn varieties
  • calculate sums and differences to solve corn facts
  • use rolled up newspaper sheets to “grow” a corn stalk
