Crows

A simple black bird found throughout North America is often misunderstood by farmers who erect scarecrows to keep them away from crops and fields. But don’t let crows “scare” you! Crows are actually beneficial in some ways—and quite smart despite not attending school! Scientists have learned from observing crow behavior that they have memories for facial recognition, can use “tools” to solve problems, and have habits such as keeping vigil for a fallen comrade or exchanging “gifts” with friendly humans. These habits have helped crows thrive and survive in spite of farmers’ efforts to scare them away. Come along with Kid Scoop as we visit the domain of these clever and cunning jet black birds.

In this issue budding ornithologists will:

  • read informational text about crows
  • learn scientific vocabulary
  • understand habits and structures that aid in crow survival
  • read closely to complete a crow “cloze” activity
  • locate items in a newspaper scavenger hunt
  • solve a stick problem that even a crow might find challenging
  • calculate sums
  • look in the news for examples of everyday tools
  • write descriptively about yourself as a bird
