de-helmetsPlaying sports helps children develop skills while having fun and learning about teamwork. Because sports typically involve running, jumping, throwing and physical contact, it’s critical that the equipment used keeps young athletes safe while on the field, court or in the arena. That’s where science, technology, engineering and math (known as STEM) come in. Designing, testing and improving equipment involves teamwork, too! In this issue students will learn about the evolution of a football helmet and compare features over time. Along the way, students will discover that their love of sports could turn into a STEM career.

In this issue students will:

  • search for details when reading expository txt
  • understand the connection between design and safety
  • represent football fractions graphically
  • problem solve on the scoreboard
  • use evidence to answer true/false sports questions
  • calculate distance
  • use the newspaper and a map to locate hometowns of sports teams in the news
  • write a “fast” story using fact and opinion
