de-homelessUnderstanding the challenges different families face helps develop compassion in our students, and developing compassion makes a stronger society where civic duty, responsibility and kindness are habits of practice. Being without a home can create a double hardship for children when their friends or classmates lack understanding. Emphasizing how much more students have in common creates a perspective that results in a positive impact on others. This issue provides an opportunity to discuss homelessness and its many faces, old and young.

In this issue students will:

  • Build an understanding of homelessness
  • Discover ways people are similar and different
  • Read examples of civic responsibility
  • Develop compassion
  • Follow simple written directions to make a “Helping Hand” wreath
  • Practice expository reading and writing
  • Complete a “cloze” activity to practice comprehension
