What if people with freckles on their faces—or those who are left-handed or with red hair—had privileges others did not? Would that be fair? Teaching children about civil rights and cultivating a culture of intolerance towards discrimination is the heart of American democratic values. This special Kid Scoop edition honors the message of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in a way that even very young children will understand. Recognizing his day in January through service to others instils the meaning of “liberty and justice for all” in a powerful and productive way. Together we can foster stewardship in our youngest citizens to build a society where fair laws and fair practices are guaranteed to each and every American.

In this issue students will:

  • Read expository text about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
  • Understand discrimination and unfair practices
  • Identify ways students can make a difference
  • Use the newspaper to locate pictures and stories that illustrate the spirit of freedom and Dr. King’s dream in action
  • Use context clues to complete a story
  • Write about leadership
