Black History Month in February provides an opportunity for all Americans to learn about inspirational heroes of color. Mary Ann Shadd is one such hero who accomplished impressive feats during her lifetime. Born in 1823 to “free parents”, Mary Ann spent her 70 years as an anti-slavery advocate and activist, published her own newspaper, inspired students through teaching, and achieved high levels of educational goals including graduating as the first female from Howard University Law School. A women for “all seasons”, Mary Ann made a difference in large and small ways, and her story continues to inspire young Americans that overcoming odds and reaching great heights can happen with grit, determination and a vision for a better world.

In this issue students will:

  • learn about anti-slavery, abolitionists, and the Underground Railroad
  • follow Mary Ann’s lifetime of accomplishments
  • use the newspaper to identify fact and opinion
