Some communities call them police, others are known as safety officers. In Canada a unique uniformed force that keeps law and order is known as the Royal Canadian Mounted Police—or RCMP. These officers have been a colorful part of Canada’s culture spanning three centuries! Founded in 1873 the RCMP were originally made their rounds mounted on horseback. Although other modern methods of transportation are used in the 21st century, these safety officers are still known as “Mounties” to this day. Bright dress uniforms with meaningful symbols and traditions attest to this distinctly Canadian tradition. Mount up and learn more about the police that keep Canada safe.
