Meet the Walrus

Meet Mr. Walrus—an animal that literally lives on top of the world! In his frigid Arctic home, the walrus thrives thanks to adaptations that help him grow, survive, and reproduce. Without a coat of fur wrapping his body for warmth, the walrus uses thick layers of fat to keep out the chill. By packing together in close company with his herd, he cuddles to stay cozy and safe. Moving his enormous weight is not an easy job! For this task a tusk—or two—is truly terrific! This Kid Scoop issue focuses on skills unique to the walrus family—like sleeping while floating in water, using whiskers to locate food, and staying comfortably warm on an icy cold ice bed. It’s a challenge to live in a frigid frozen land, but Mr. Walrus loves calling this place home!

In this issue students will:

  • read informational text about the walrus
  • learn unique structures that aid in survival
  • use context clues to locate appropriate vocabulary words
  • calculate sums using multiple addends
  • follow visual clues to draw a walrus
