Memorial Day: Honoring Those Whole Gave All

← Continue shopping

On May 31st America pauses to remember those who lost their lives in defense our country. Since the end of the Civil War to the present day, communities have paid tribute to members of the military by holding special ceremonies, placing flags on graves, and visiting military memorials. It’s never too early to begin teaching children the meaning behind national observances, and recognize the sacrifices made by those who came before us. This issue provides information and activities that will help young citizens understand this special day of remembrance and identify ways children can honor those who “gave all” in the line of duty.

In this issue students will:

  • read informational text about the history and observations of Memorial Day
  • read “closely” to select appropriate vocabulary words
  • learn about the USS Arizona Memorial
  • supply missing vowels to spell words
  • solve a picnic puzzle
  • design a Memorial Day flag from words and pictures in the news
  • write an appreciation letter to a veteran
  • understand appropriate ways to observe Memorial Day
