Message in a Bottle

← Continue shopping

Long before emails, text messages, and phone calls became a way of life, people had different and unusual ways to communicate across long distances. One unique method of sending a message was inside a corked bottle tossed into the ocean waves! Naturally, the intended recipient was unknown as there was no guarantee that the glass vessel—or message contained inside—would survive a journey of many miles! Some messages did survive—discovered decades later, giving us a first hand glimpse into the past. This issue follows one message that traveled waves from the Indian Ocean to Western Australia, and another that survived a journey from England to Holland across the treacherous English Channel. Step into our Kid Scoop time machine and journey back to learn more about messages that rode the waves.

In this issue students will:

  • Read informational historical text about sending messages in bottles
  • Use a secret code to decipher a message
  • Complete a bottle pattern
  • Explore letters to the editor in the local news before writing one of your own
  • Read closely to respond to questions about text
  • Create your own bottled message to send
  • Use the newspaper to find parts of speech to use in a message challenge
