Honoring and remembering our nation’s heroes who fought to protect our freedom is the reason for memorial Day. How this noble tradition began and became embedded in the fiber of our national culture is the focus of this issue. Young citizens will learn how and why Decoration Day evolved into Memorial Day, what traditions are associated with this national holiday and why it is a solemn day of observation. Activities are designed to deepen an understanding of patriotism and age-appropriate ways students can show respect while learning about history and a special national holiday.
