Water seems to flow magically from every faucet in your home—to water the garden, wash clothes, prepare food, and keep you clean. How convenient it is to have water always available when you need it! But it’s not magic that brings water through faucets to make living easier. It’s pipes connected to a water supply, and it’s plumbers that make the connection. This issue in Kid Scoop’s “Career Series” focuses on the plumbing trade, and the process and experience required to become a master plumber. Discover why being a plumber is a great career option as you explore what it means to move from an unskilled “apprentice” to a highly skilled “journeyman.” Learn names and uses of some tools of the trade, and see if you can find your way through a maze of pipes. You’ll understand that water flowing effortlessly into your bathtub and sinks is due to the skill of men and women with the know how to “know how!”

In this issue students will:

  • read informational text about plumbers and plumbing as a career
  • understand steps to become a master in a trade
  • use a ruler to select the correct length of pipe to repair a leak
  • look through the newspaper to locate words that have more than one meaning (like “trade”)
  • match wrenches to nuts
  • analyze a newspaper article to respond to prompts
  • find trades advertised in the news
  • write descriptively about your dream career
