Purple Pinkies and Polio

← Continue shopping

de-purplepinkiesPolio is a crippling disease that has not been eliminated despite heroic efforts to eradicate it worldwide. This issue looks at local heroes in action, and shines a spotlight on what students can do in their own schoolyards to practice world citizenship and influence outcomes. Meet the Leadership Class at a small middle school in the heart of California’s Wine Country. Discover their original plan to raise funds and awareness as difference makers, and how they partnered with the local Rotary Club and the Gates Foundation to have a greater impact. Motivating adolescents with the promise of a purple pinky for each dollar donated proved to be a bounding success. Imagine—what could you do?

In this issue students will:

  • Read expository text about one school’s creative approach to solving a world health challenge
  • Look for context clues to fill in the blanks to tell a purple pinky story
  • Use the newspaper on a homophone hunt
  • Write truthfully about an encounter with the truth – and how you managed yourself!
  • Solve puzzles and follow written directions
