Long before people began using the symbols 0-9 to represent numbers, they counted on their fingers and toes to keep track of amounts. How convenient that these body parts came in sets of five! Later, tally marks bundled together these sets of five for tracking larger amounts. But if you lived in Ancient Rome, you would use letters of the alphabet to express numeric amounts. Although these “Roman Numerals” were widely used throughout the vast Roman Empire, they were not very convenient for performing operations like adding or subtracting, making it a challenge to solve problems. Eventually, Roman Numerals were replaced by the number system we use today. However, Roman Numerals can still be found all over the world! They are fun to learn using only a few simple rules to make combinations. Join Kid Scoop a we journey back to Ancient Rome to learn how letters were used to make numbers!
