You’d think a trip to outer space would be a voyage to an open, spacious, and uncluttered environment. But man’s journeys to the stars have left more than a trace of trash behind. Over decades of space exploration, a variety of objects in a range of sizes has been left behind, and, like all litter, creates a problem! Orbiting at tremendous speeds, solid objects hurtling through space can cause serious damage to other working objects like satellites. Fortunately, science has come to the rescue. Cleaning the heavens is no easy task, but a solution is now within reach. Grab this issue to discover how this puzzling space challenge will be resolved, and hop on board for Space Mission Clean Up!

In this issue budding scientists will:

  • read informational text about litter in space
  • learn the past, present, and future of space litter
  • complete a “cloze” reading activity to demonstrate reading comprehension
  • use a ruler to measure common objects using both standard and metric units
  • calculate sums and recognize even or odd numbers to identify actual objects in space
  • use the newspaper to locate and count a variety of items in the news
  • learn about an invention designed to clean up the heavens
  • scour the news for science-related articles
  • write persuasively about reasons why you should win a space prize!
