There are stars in the skies, stars in your eyes, and stars in the ocean! Ocean stars are soft-bodied animals with unique structures including the ability to reproduce from a single body part! Starfish are found close to the shore and make their homes in the shallow waters where they thrive through adaptations to the ocean environment. Discover different varieties in the starfish family—from “Candy Cane” to “Sunflower.” Think all starfish have five arms? Think again! Some have many more! Try your hand at creating your own unique creature using inspiration from photos and illustrations in the newspaper! Maybe your creature will be the “star” of the show!

In this issue students will:

  • read informational text about starfish
  • learn content specific vocabulary
  • fill in the blanks with the correct word using context clues
  • understand starfish have structures that aid in survival and reproduction
  • scour the news for unusual facts
  • read closely to edit a starfish passage
