Lace up your sneakers and put on your game face! It’s time to score some points with basketball and learn the science, technology, engineering and math behind the shots. What better way to understand physics and the concept of energy transfer from potential to kinetic to thermal than in the application of something kids really enjoy—games and sports. Math drills sharpen skills and young mathletes will be challenged with standard and metric measurement of bouncing balls, calculating differences between scores researched in the sports section and applying critical thinking to math puzzlers. The Fit & Fun section adds physical challenges they can try and master at their own pace. Grab a ball and get on the court … the game is about the begin!

In this issue young “mathletes” will:

  • Bounce into physics
  • Read expository text in science and math
  • Calculate using standard and metric measurement
  • Use the newspaper for an energy scavenger hunt
  • Problem solve basketball challenges
  • Write like a sports reporter
  • Follow written directions for physical and mental exercises
