Lovely to look at, but if you happen to be a fly or mosquito steer clear of this meat eating plant! The Venus Flytrap has uniquely adapted to nature by developing structures that sense movement on its leaves and will close its “jaws of doom” to trap an unsuspecting insect inside. While most plants use sunlight, water, chlorophyll and carbon dioxide to make their food, the Venus Flytrap attracts living things as sustenance making it a rarity in the plant kingdom. Little spikes topping the leaves may look like teeth, but they aren’t for chewing! The Flytrap depends on special juices to dissolve its prey. Youngsters are fascinated by this unusual plant that seems to have stepped right out of a fairy tale! Maybe you’ll find one where you live to see it in action!
