No matter the season, kids love to play games indoors or outdoors. Most games involve the use of some kind of ball, a set of rules, score keeping, running, kicking, throwing, or tossing. Certain games have been around well over 100 years—which means they’ve withstood the “test of time” and continue to attract players. Ever wonder how today’s popular games were invented? Who had the first idea, and how did inspiration come? This issue dives deeper into the worldwide sport of volleyball, and takes you on a journey through time to the very first volleyball game ever played. The rules have changed over time, but keeping the ball in the air on your side of a net, then “volleying” it to the other team remains the same. Sounds easy? It’s tricky, fun, and challenging. Are you up for it? If so, grab a ball and “bump, set, spike” some exercise into your life!

In this issue students will:

  • read informational text about volleyball
  • calculate sums and differences to understand special vocabulary
  • select objects to invent a new game
  • differentiate between fact and opinion
  • challenge a partner to a volley puzzle
  • locate “A to Z” verbs in the news
  • write about a challenge you overcame
  • read closely to understand words in context
