Wants or Needs

What’s the difference between something that is nice to have and something you MUST have to survive? One is a “want” and one is a “need.” Understanding the difference makes a wise consumer! This issue of Kid Scoop looks at “wants” and “needs” through a unique historical lens traveling from the Stone Age to Ancient Egypt to the Old West—and comparing wants and needs over time. Asking yourself, “Do I need this to survive, or can I live without it?” is a filter for making better choices. Students will understand that over time “needs” can become “wants!” Helping your young consumer evaluate “wants” vs “needs” is a life skill worth learning. You’ll “need” to learn this skill if you “want” to recognize what is essential!

In this issue students will:

  • read informational text comparing “wants” and “needs”
  • travel through time to look at “wants” and “needs” in the past
  • understand that over time “needs” can become “wants”
  • look through the newspaper for contemporary “wants” and “needs”
  • discover ideas to create a “Kid’s Emergency Activity Kit” to be prepared for an unexpected situation
  • write what “a penny saved” means to you
  • scour the news with a parent or caregiver to learn how consumer goods have evolved between two generations
