Woodpecker’s Budget Plan

← Continue shopping

Keeping a growing family well-fed while working within a budget is a valuable lifeskill all future consumers should master. Kid Scoop adds a dose of fun to “budget learning” by introducing students to a pair of wise woodpeckers who plan their winter food stash. Woodpeckers think they’ve created a safe place to “bank” their winter stash of acorns, nuts, and seeds in trees, but they must also account for food loss due to weather conditions and animals who happen by and help themselves! Your challenge is to help the woodpeckers calculate how much they’ll need to survive. Once students solve the woodpecker challenge, will they be ready to “peck away” at their own household food budgets?

In this issue students will:

  • read informational text about woodpeckers’ winter food storage
  • understand animals have structures that aid in survival
  • calculate a Woodpecker Family Food Budget
  • proofread a passage to edit for errors
  • follow visual instruction to draw a woodpecker
  • use newspaper ads to budget meals for a week
  • calculate numbers in the news that total 50 exactly
  • write about how you make a difference
