Just Plain Weird

Fond of Spinning

Golden silk orb-weaver spiders weave impressive webs and their genus name Nephila means fond of spinning. The webs themselves are golden and very strong and the spider will rebuild parts of the web if they become damaged. Webs are often very large — up to about three feet across.

The golden silk orb-weaver spiders in Australia are capable or catching small birds in their webs. Not counting the length or their legs, they can grow up to two inches long. They are widespread in warmer climates and have been found in Florida and Texas. The oldest genus of spiders, fossils of these spiders have been dated back 165 million years.

This remarkable film, shot in 2012 in Queensland, Australia, shows the spider in action against a tree snake.
