de-treeringsDid you know that Christmas trees – like many other trees – can “talk” to you and tell a story about their past? It’s true! Looking at the base of a tree that’s been cut, you’ll see a series of rings that tell a wonderful tale of history. Each year brings a new layer and a new story. Meet a “dendochronologist” – or tree ring expert – who will describe how these amazing rings show age, indicate years of rainfall or drought, show their scars from fire damage, volcanic eruption or even when they’ve been visited by insects. This issue can launch a young botanist into an interesting hobby – or career – studying plant life in your own backyard.

In this issue students will:

  • read expository text about plant life
  • learn how to read a tree’s story
