Each year thousands of young people build and race gravity-powered cars in a race call the Soap Box Derby.
The Soap Box Derby is a youth racing program which has run nationally since 1934. World Championship finals are held each summer at Derby Downs in Akron, Ohio. This is a unique program for boys and girls between the ages of 7 and 17 that encourages close adult-youth activities while building and racing a gravity powdered car together. The youth are encouraged to do as much of the work as their ability will permit. Good sportsmanship, spending quality time together, and having fun is what it is all about!
