Try This At Home

Good Homework Habits

Let’s say you have found a quiet place to do your homework, where you can sit and concentrate and have everything you need. (But not on your bed in case you fall asleep!) Great! Your homework is done on time.

So how do you REMEMBER to TURN IN your homework?

Organization

Buy a folder or a binder to keep everything together. Check it regularly. Write your name on assignment sheets as soon as you receive them and if necessary, pencil in the day and date of when the homework is due. If you have any handouts or worksheets, keep these together with the homework assignment. Any handouts for your parents keep at the front of the folder or binder. Label folders so you can keep track.

Check Your Backpack

Before you leave school, check that you have everything you need for your assignment. If you have a reading assignment, make sure the book you need is in your bag.

When you get Home

Take out your folder and books and put them where you will do your homework. Make sure parent handouts go to a parent.

Before School

Check that everything you need is in your backpack and that your completed assignments are in your folder. Different teachers will have different rules about handing in homework. Partner with a reliable friend to double check that you both know due dates and can remind each other to hand work in on time. If you’re not sure, ASK your teacher.

Good homework habits should start early. If you can get it right in 1st and 2nd grade, you’ll instill these habits for when you have multiple homework assignments in middle school and beyond.
